Application Availability & Recovery

As businesses become increasingly dependent on information technology, application availability is increasingly critical. Each application has its own requirements, service levels and protection options and processes, policies, and procedures must be put in place to restore critical operations for the resumption of business. Availability and recovery options vary depending on the criticality of the service provided and are generally described by two factors: the recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO).

Backup and Recovery– The simplest and most common method of service recovery involves taking an offline copy of the data to be protected. Modern backup options can leverage de-duplication technologies to significantly reduce the amount of space consumed, shrink backup windows and provide faster recovery than traditional tape-based solutions. CAM Consultants can help analyze your existing infrastructure and provide options for increasing overall backup and recovery efficiency.

Single Site / Multi-Site Replication and Recovery– For applications and services that require near zero downtime, many customers look to storage replication technologies. These technologies can provide near-realtime copies of critical data in two places: within the same datacenter, across town, or across the country. CAM Consultants can help explain the options, benefits, and limitations encountered with these types of solutions, from copying backed-up data to extending FibreChannel SANs and array replication.

OS and Application Clustering – Some applications have the capability to be deployed in clustered configurations. These configurations typically offer higher availability but tend to require more skill to manage. Many clustered application deployments can be simplified yet maintain similar service levels by implementing clustering at the virtual infrastructure layer in place of existing clustering. CAM Consultants can work with your team to identify ways to reduce management overhead by simplifying existing cluster deployments.
